Designing Business Logos For Construction Firms
The construction sector is very competitive indeed. Bigger firms handle the major development jobs while smaller and newer firms must prove their quality with various subcontracts before moving on to bigger projects.
My design firm has just been presented an assignment to produce a new construction logo design for a local construction company. To start things off, the art director and I dropped by our client’s office for a short interview to gather more information about the company.
Like many other organizations we have interviewed, most companies are aware they need a new look to remain competitive but are not quite sure what they want. That is where our services can make a positive impact.
Before beginning work on the logo design, we normally inquire about the history of the firm, its turnover, its philosophy, its specialty, its target market and why it wants a new construction logo design; just to get a feel of things.
We learned that they are a relatively young organization, 10 years in the business with 4 large subcontract projects and many smaller ones under their belts, each one larger than the last. They are now advancing to adopt a blue ocean strategy and progress into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development - a niche with very few competitors - and thus seizing the opportunity to garner a reputation for themselves as one of the first names to service this niche.
From the dialogue, we discovered that they have the required resources to engage medium scale development projects. Their chosen niche also makes it easier to differentiate them from other developers.
At our agency, we had a little brainstorming session and and decided on the conceptual direction. Following that we assigned 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo samples to turn those concepts to logos.
After several days, the design concepts were ready for perusal. Some designs utilized stylized text while others utilized construction related graphics like wheelbarrows and bricks to get the point across. Though all four construction logo design samples were unique in their own way, they all clung to 2 crucial points.
Professionalism
Developers deal with costly projects. In order to be awarded such projects, they must always be perceived as a professional and responsible organization with excellent business ethics. Thus, the clean and clear designs reflected that adequately.
Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this firm wants to penetrate. Not surprisingly, the designs, either by color or graphics, corroborates the company’s dedication to the preservation of the environment.
Finally it is up to our clients to select one of the four design concepts. Alternatively they can certainly make changes here and there but as professional designers, we must make certain the design in the end keeps to the key points pointed out earlier.
